Aizawl: Mizoram Public Works Department (PWD) minister Vanlalhlana has inaugurated two key bridges — one over the Langkaih river at the Mizoram-Tripura interstate border and the other, the Teirei bridge, on the Bairabi-Zamuang road, connecting Kolasib and Mamit districts.
In his address on Friday, the minister expressed hope that these bridges would strengthen connectivity and contribute to the progress of the state. He stated that the inauguration was not just about opening bridges, but also a fulfillment of promises made to the people. Vanlalhlana praised the efforts of state PWD employees involved in the projects, describing the occasion as a landmark moment for Mizoram.
Referring to the Langkaih bridge as a ‘border bridge’, he said that the bridge, aimed at strengthening connectivity with Tripura, would further deepen ties and facilitate greater interaction between the two states. He also noted that Mamit district, which is categorized by the central government as an ‘aspirational district’, possesses immense potential across various sectors and urged the people to continue working with dedication for the district’s progress. The event was chaired by PWD engineer-in-chief Zoramliana.
The Teirei bridge on the Bairabi-Zamuang road is a double-lane steel girder bridge located about 7 km from Bairabi. Its construction was funded by a National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) loan of Rs 13.65 crore, with a total project cost of Rs 27.65 crore, including additional government funding. The project was awarded in 2017 to a private company, with work beginning in 2018.
The Langkaih bridge, located on the Mizoram-Tripura border between Kanhmun and Damcherra villages, was funded by a NABARD (RIDF-XXIII) loan of Rs 22.31 crore. The project was awarded in 2018 to a private firm, with a total expenditure of Rs 22.03 crore.
The inauguration of these bridges marks a significant step in improving infrastructure in Mizoram, particularly in enhancing road connectivity and economic integration with neighboring states. The projects are expected to benefit local communities by reducing travel time and facilitating the movement of goods and people.
