Authorities in Madhya Pradesh have expanded search operations to locate four passengers who remain missing after a cruise boat capsized in the Narmada river. The incident occurred near the Khandwa district, prompting a large-scale rescue effort involving multiple agencies.
Details of the Incident
The boat, carrying around 30 passengers, overturned on Sunday evening. While most were rescued, four individuals are still unaccounted for. Local officials confirmed that the boat was on a recreational cruise when it met with the accident.
Search Operations Intensified
Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed. Divers are scanning the riverbed, and sonar equipment is being used to locate any signs of the missing. The search area has been expanded downstream.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the incident and assured all possible assistance to the affected families. He directed officials to expedite the search and rescue operations.
Eyewitness Accounts
Survivors recounted moments of panic as the boat started sinking. Some managed to swim to safety, while others were rescued by nearby boats. One survivor said, "It was chaotic; people were screaming and trying to hold onto anything that floated."
Investigation Underway
An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest the boat may have been overloaded or faced rough waters. The boat's owner and crew are being questioned.
Local authorities have announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
The tragedy has raised concerns about safety regulations for river cruises in the region. Activists are demanding stricter enforcement of norms to prevent such incidents in the future.
