Nagpur experienced gusty winds, thunderstorms, and scattered pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday evening, leading to the uprooting of trees at multiple locations across the city. The incidents caused damage to a parked car and approximately 15 slum huts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted additional rainfall over the next two days.
Relief from Intense Heat
The evening showers brought much-needed relief from the intense heat, as Nagpur had recorded a maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius earlier in the day. The sudden downpour and strong winds, however, led to several tree-fall incidents.
Incident in Prabhag 28
In Prabhag 28, a large tree collapsed onto a parked car, causing significant damage. A team from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's garden department promptly arrived at the scene and cleared the obstruction, ensuring the area was safe for traffic and pedestrians.
Damage in Kumbhartoli, Sitabuldi
Around 6:30 pm, a large tree uprooted by strong winds crashed onto slum dwellings in Kumbhartoli, Sitabuldi. Former corporator Sanjay Bengale alerted the civic control room about the mishap. A firefighting team led by Cotton Market Fire Station officer-in-charge Bhagwan Wagh reached the spot and initiated a clearance operation. Officials confirmed that nearly 15 huts were damaged. Fire brigade personnel cut and removed the tree to eliminate further risk to the residents.
Other Incidents and Precautionary Measures
Similar tree-fall incidents were reported from other parts of the city as strong winds swept through Nagpur. Civic teams remained on high alert to respond to weather-related emergencies. Despite the damage, no injuries or loss of life were reported. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid standing near old trees, electric poles, and temporary structures during thunderstorms and high winds to ensure their safety.
