Biharsharif: The Nalanda district administration has stepped up preparations for the internationally renowned Malmas Mela, which is scheduled to be held in Rajgir from May 17 to June 15. District Magistrate Kundan Kumar and Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni jointly reviewed the arrangements with priests, mahants, and members of various religious groups at the Rajgir International Convention Centre (RICC) on Thursday.
Significance of the Malmas Mela
Observed once every three years during the Hindu month of Adhik Maas, the Malmas Mela is one of Bihar's largest religious congregations. Lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad visit Rajgir during this period to take a holy dip in the sacred Brahm Kund hot springs and offer prayers at temples and other religious sites. The event holds deep spiritual importance for devotees, who believe that bathing in the hot springs during this auspicious month cleanses sins and brings blessings.
Record Auction and Commercial Scale
Spread over nearly 41.5 acres, the mela grounds have fetched a record auction price of Rs 7 crore this year, reflecting the growing scale and commercial significance of the event. Temporary markets, food stalls, shops selling household goods, amusement rides, swings, circus shows, and entertainment zones are expected to come up across the fair area during the month-long event. The record auction indicates increased interest from vendors and businesses, making the fair a major economic activity in the region.
Security and Crowd Management Plans
Officials said elaborate arrangements were being made for crowd management, sanitation, traffic regulation, and maintenance of law and order. Additional police personnel will be deployed at sensitive locations, while CCTV surveillance and emergency response systems are also being strengthened. The administration will maintain strict vigil against pickpocketing, chain-snatching, and other anti-social activities to ensure a safe and orderly experience for devotees. Traffic diversions and parking zones are being planned to handle the influx of vehicles.
Infrastructure and Amenities
Sanitation facilities, including temporary toilets and waste disposal systems, are being set up across the fairground. Drinking water points, first-aid centers, and information kiosks will be established to assist pilgrims. The administration is also coordinating with the health department to set up medical camps and ambulances for emergency care. Power supply and lighting arrangements are being upgraded to ensure smooth functioning during the night.
The Malmas Mela is not only a religious event but also a cultural showcase, with folk performances and traditional crafts adding to the festive atmosphere. The district administration aims to provide a seamless experience for all visitors, combining spiritual fulfillment with modern amenities.
