Biharsharif: Nalanda University is set to hold its third convocation ceremony on Tuesday at the newly constructed ‘Vishwamitralaya’ auditorium on the university campus. During the event, degrees will be awarded to 219 students representing 14 countries, highlighting the institution’s growing international character.

Previous Convocation and Auditorium Inauguration

The university’s second convocation took place on April 1 this year at its net-zero campus, with President Droupadi Murmu in attendance. The 2,000-seat Vishwamitralaya auditorium, where the upcoming ceremony will be held, was also inaugurated by the President during that event.

History of Convocation Ceremonies

The revived university organized its first convocation in 2016, attended by then President Pranab Mukherjee. This occurred two years after the academic session began in 2014 at a rented accommodation. The inaugural session was also attended by the late Sushma Swaraj, former external affairs minister.

Dignitaries for the Third Convocation

According to university authorities, P K Mishra, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, will be the chief guest at the third convocation. Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Rudrendra Tandon, Secretary (East) in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Government of India, will attend as guests of honour.

Timely Degree Award Initiative

In a special initiative, the university has decided to organize the convocation just nine days after the completion of examinations. Officials stated that this move reflects the institution’s commitment to ensuring timely award of degrees and facilitating students’ academic and professional progression.

International Student Representation

The graduating batch of 2024-26 includes students from 14 countries, such as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar. This diverse academic environment underscores the university’s global appeal.

Awards and New Centre Inauguration

Eight meritorious students, including seven women, will receive gold medals for academic excellence during the ceremony. Following the convocation, the chief guest will also inaugurate the university’s ‘Kautilya Centre for Capacity Building’.
