Navy Chief Meets Myanmar Navy Head on Maritime Security

NEW DELHI: As part of efforts to intensify the Modi government's 'Act East Policy', Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi held a meeting with Myanmar Navy's Commander-in-Chief Admiral Htein Win in Naypyitaw. The discussions focused on growing bilateral ties and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region.

Key Areas of Discussion

The meeting also emphasized advancing naval engagements between the two countries. Key areas of discussion included maritime engagement opportunities, capacity building, training exchanges, mobile training teams (MTTs), hydrography, and greater interoperability.

Admiral Tripathi is on an official visit to Myanmar from May 2 to 5. As part of the ongoing visit, he held discussions with Admiral Htein Win on May 4. The Indian Navy spokesperson stated on X that the meeting marked a significant milestone to foster deeper navy-to-navy ties and enhance maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region, under the initiative MAHASAGAR.

Meetings with Myanmar Defence Officials

On Monday, Admiral Tripathi also met Myanmar's Defence Minister General Htun Aung. They discussed the current canvas of bilateral ties, further strengthening the relationship between the two nations.

In a related development, Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar entered Yangon Harbour on Monday as part of India's ongoing maritime engagement in the region. During the visit, the Myanmar Navy will host the crew of IOS Sagar for official interactions.

Earlier Engagements

Earlier, Admiral Tripathi met Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing, Commander of Myanmar Navy's Central Naval Command, and Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw, Chief of Naval Training Command, in Yangon. They discussed strengthening navy-to-navy cooperation, bolstering the existing defence partnership, and augmenting operational engagements.

The visit underscores India's commitment to its Act East Policy and the importance of maritime security in the Bay of Bengal. Both navies are expected to continue their collaboration through joint exercises and capacity-building initiatives.
