A major transformation in traffic flow has taken place on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway following the opening of a crucial connecting link. Over the past ten days, approximately 70 percent of light motor vehicles have been rerouted to this new stretch, significantly alleviating congestion on the traditionally busy Borghat section. Heavy Vehicles Benefit from Reduced Load
Only 30 percent of heavy motor vehicles now utilize the Borghat stretch, and no congestion has been reported. Officials have confirmed that traffic jams have been virtually eliminated during this period, marking a stark contrast to earlier conditions. The improved distribution of vehicles has enhanced overall efficiency on the expressway.
New Connecting Link Opens to Traffic
The 19.84-kilometer Khopoli-to-Kusgaon connecting stretch was commissioned on May 1. Built at a cost of Rs 6,700 crore, this infrastructure project has reduced the distance between Mumbai and Pune by 6 kilometers and cut travel time by approximately 30 minutes. The link represents a significant investment in regional connectivity.
Enhanced Safety and Design Features
The new stretch features a flat alignment without major slopes or elevations, improving safety and vehicle movement. It includes eight lanes over a 5.86-kilometer section, which helps mitigate risks associated with steep gradients on the older ghat section. The design prioritizes smoother transitions and reduced accident potential.
Seven-Year Project Nears Completion
Construction on the connecting link began in 2019 and was completed over seven years. The project was developed to address long-standing traffic issues and improve travel efficiency between the two major cities. Its completion marks a milestone in regional infrastructure development.
High Traffic Volume and Bypass of Congestion Points
The expressway carries nearly 1.5 lakh vehicles daily. The new link bypasses major congestion points such as Lonavala and Khandala, where traffic jams were frequent earlier. This strategic rerouting has significantly improved travel times for commuters.
