Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday concluded his three-day state visit to Seychelles, asserting that the next fifty years of India-Seychelles relations will be defined by innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity. In a post on X after departing for New Delhi, he described the visit as one marked by substantive outcomes that will further strengthen bilateral ties. The visit coincided with Seychelles' 50th Independence anniversary, where Modi was the Guest of Honour at the National Day celebrations.
Substantive Outcomes and Deep Trust
PM Modi stated that the past fifty years of diplomatic relations have been characterized by deep trust and shared progress. He expressed confidence that the future partnership will be driven by innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) termed the visit highly successful and a significant milestone in bilateral ties. Modi was seen off at the airport by Seychelles Vice-President Sebastien Pillay.
During his visit from June 27 to June 29, Modi engaged with the Indian diaspora, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Peace Park in Victoria, and offered prayers at the Arulmigu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple. He commended the Seychelles Hindu Kovil Sangam for preserving Indian culture and spirituality.
Historic Firsts and Agreements
Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to be the Guest of Honour at Seychelles' National Day and to address the National Assembly of Seychelles. India and Seychelles signed 19 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements, including an extradition treaty to combat transnational crime and development assistance. The MEA highlighted that the visit reinforced the shared commitment to deepen cooperation across sectors and advance a common vision for a safe and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
Strengthening People-Centric Partnership
In his interaction with the Indian community, Modi appreciated their contributions to Seychelles' socio-economic development and emphasized their enduring ties with India. The MEA noted that the Prime Minister underlined the important role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening the longstanding people-centric partnership between the two nations.
The visit underscored the longstanding partnership between India and Seychelles, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation across diverse sectors and working together towards ensuring peace, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
