A tragic incident in Kochi has claimed the life of a third nursing student, Emil Sunil, who succumbed to injuries after falling into the Periyar Valley Canal in Asamannoor near Perumbavoor. Sunil, a resident of Manarcadu in Kottayam, had been on ventilator support at Mar Baselios Medical Mission Hospital since the accident. He died on Wednesday morning, bringing the total death toll to three.
Details of the Incident
The victims, all students of KMP Nursing Institute, had entered the canal around 11 am on Tuesday to cool off from the sweltering heat. Within moments, a strong current swept them under, leaving them struggling to regain footing. Locals rushed to assist and alerted emergency services. Fire and rescue teams from Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam, along with a scuba unit, launched a search operation.
Two of Sunil's companions, Ajmal Habeeb of Malappuram and Ajsal of Kollam, had died on Tuesday. Their bodies were brought to the campus on Wednesday for public viewing.
Warning About Canal Dangers
Local residents noted that many people, influenced by social media reels, visit the canal to bathe. They warned that the canal is 12 feet deep and poses a fatal risk to inexperienced swimmers. The tragedy highlights the need for caution around such water bodies.
