Pakistan PM hopes Iran-US peace deal soon

Pakistan's Prime Minister expressed hope on Wednesday that a peace agreement between Iran and the United States would be finalised soon, as the two countries continue negotiations mediated by Gulf states. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz Sharif said, 'We are closely watching the developments between Iran and the US. A peaceful resolution is in the interest of the entire region, including Pakistan.'

Background of Iran-US tensions

The United States and Iran have been at odds for decades, with tensions escalating after the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018. Recent months have seen backchannel talks in Oman and Qatar aimed at de-escalation. Pakistan, which shares a border with Iran, has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy.

Pakistan's role as a mediator

Pakistan has historically played a mediating role in regional conflicts. In 2020, it facilitated talks between the US and the Taliban. PM Sharif emphasised that Pakistan stands ready to support any initiative that promotes peace. 'We have offered our good offices to both sides, and we hope that a comprehensive deal will be reached soon,' he added.

Economic implications for Pakistan

A peace deal could have significant economic benefits for Pakistan, including reduced oil prices and increased trade with Iran. The country is currently facing a severe economic crisis, with inflation at record highs. Analysts believe that a stable neighbourhood could attract foreign investment and boost the energy sector.

However, analysts caution that any agreement must address Iran's nuclear program and regional security concerns. The US has insisted on strict monitoring mechanisms, while Iran demands the lifting of all sanctions. Despite the challenges, PM Sharif expressed confidence in the ongoing negotiations.

The development comes as Pakistan prepares for a visit by a high-level Iranian delegation next month to discuss trade and security cooperation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the two countries are working on a roadmap for enhanced bilateral ties.
