Philippine Envoy: India Prominent in Manila's Foreign Policy

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Philippine Ambassador to India, Josel F Ignacio, stated that India holds a "prominent and impactful place" in Manila's foreign policy, as bilateral relations deepen in trade, defence, and strategic cooperation.

Philippine Independence Day Reception

Speaking at a diplomatic reception in New Delhi on Friday marking the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, Ambassador Ignacio emphasized the Philippines' role as a fast-growing economy and a responsible global stakeholder. He noted, "We are one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and in our ASEAN community, resilient to global headwinds. A contributing and responsible member of the family of nations committed to multilateralism."

ASEAN Chairmanship Priorities

The Philippines currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) under the theme 'Navigating Our Future Together.' Ignacio explained that the theme reflects the necessity of collective action in a rapidly changing global environment. The chairmanship is guided by three pillars: peace and security, prosperity, and people empowerment.

Peace and Security: Anchoring regional stability through dialogue, adherence to international law, and cooperation on emerging threats. Prosperity Corridors: Building systemic connections for shared prosperity via economic integration, digital transformation, and inclusive development. People Empowerment: Focusing on human capital development.

India-Philippines Strategic Partnership

Turning to bilateral ties, Ambassador Ignacio stated that the partnership with India "occupies a prominent and impactful place, marked by one high point after another." Bilateral trade has reached nearly USD 4 billion, setting new records year after year. Defence cooperation is also on an upward trajectory, spanning equipment, military education, and maritime activities. The presence of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth at the event underscored this growth.

Political relations are at an all-time high following the elevation of ties to a strategic partnership during Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s visit to India in August last year. Ignacio highlighted that India is only the Philippines' fifth strategic partner, attesting to its valued place in Manila's foreign policy.
