Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held comprehensive talks on Thursday during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi, covering the entire spectrum of bilateral ties. The discussions resulted in the adoption of three landmark documents and the exchange of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) spanning Economic Security, Clean Energy, critical technologies, and research and development.
Leaders Adopt Three Key Documents
Both sides adopted a Joint Declaration on Economic Security, a Joint Statement on Cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence, and a Joint Statement on Energy Resilience. According to Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, the talks delivered concrete progress on key bilateral priorities.
In a post on X, Jaiswal stated, "Advancing ties, strengthening bonds: 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. PM Narendra Modi and PM Sanae Takaichi held wide-ranging talks on the full spectrum of India-Japan ties, including trade & investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defence and people-to-people exchanges. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest."
MoUs and Agreements Exchanged
The leaders witnessed the exchange of key MoUs and agreements covering Economic Security, Clean Energy, critical technologies, and research and development. Both sides also agreed on a list of activities to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi, in a joint press appearance with PM Modi, said, "Japan and India, leveraging each other's strengths, will together become stronger and more prosperous. Amidst the tumultuous international situation, building such complementary cooperative relations has become even more important."
Ceremonial Reception and Bilateral Talks
Earlier in the day, Takaichi was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Ministry of External Affairs posted on X, "Further strengthening our special partnership. PM Sanae Takaichi of Japan was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. A partnership for the future, built on trust and rooted in shared values."
Following the reception, both leaders held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House. The MEA stated, "Taking forward a partnership anchored in trust, shared values and strategic convergence. PM Narendra Modi warmly received Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan at the Hyderabad House today."
Key Areas of Cooperation
The wide-ranging discussions covered trade and investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defence, and people-to-people exchanges. The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, reflecting the strategic convergence between the two nations.
The 16th India-Japan Annual Summit marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship, with both sides committing to deepen cooperation in critical areas such as artificial intelligence and clean energy.
