PM Modi Meets Australian PM Albanese in Melbourne

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Melbourne on July 9, 2026, with trade, defence, and critical technology emerging as the key agenda items. The meeting aimed to bolster the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

Discussions on trade centered on finalizing the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which is expected to significantly boost bilateral trade. According to official sources, the two leaders reviewed progress on the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) signed earlier, which has already led to a 20% increase in two-way trade, reaching $45 billion in 2025. They emphasized the need to diversify supply chains and enhance market access for goods and services.

Defence and Security Partnership

Defence cooperation was a major focus, with both sides agreeing to expand joint military exercises and intelligence sharing. The leaders welcomed the conclusion of the bilateral logistics agreement, which will facilitate mutual access to military facilities for maintenance and resupply. They also discussed maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, reaffirming their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. “Our defence partnership is a cornerstone of our strategic ties,” Albanese said, according to a joint statement.

Critical Technology and Innovation

On critical technology, the two prime ministers launched a new India-Australia Critical Technology Partnership to collaborate on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. This initiative includes joint research projects and talent exchange programs. Modi highlighted the importance of trusted technology supply chains, stating, “We are committed to building resilient and secure technology ecosystems.” The partnership also aims to address challenges related to data governance and digital public infrastructure.

People-to-People Ties and Education

The leaders also discussed strengthening people-to-people ties, particularly through education and skilled migration. Australia announced a new scholarship program for Indian students in STEM fields, with 1,000 scholarships over the next five years. Additionally, they agreed to mutual recognition of qualifications to facilitate greater mobility of professionals.

Regional and Global Issues

Modi and Albanese exchanged views on regional and global issues, including the situation in the Indo-Pacific, climate change, and reform of multilateral institutions. They called for an early conclusion of the India-Australia-Indonesia trilateral maritime cooperation framework. Both leaders expressed strong support for the Quad grouping and its role in promoting regional stability.

The meeting concluded with the signing of several agreements, including a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in renewable energy and a pact on sharing cybersecurity threat intelligence. The two leaders are expected to meet again at the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil.
