Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday approved the purchase of advanced amphibious machines designed for rescue operations during floods and for desilting rivers and drains. Reviewing the state's preparedness for the monsoon season, Mann emphasized that these machines are capable of operating even in flowing water and can perform deep desilting, making them essential for both preventive measures and emergency response.
Procurement Details
The Chief Minister directed officials to prepare a detailed report on the procurement of these machines. He shared his observations from a recent trip to Finland, where such multipurpose machines are optimally utilized. According to Mann, these machines can be effectively deployed for the maintenance and cleaning of rivers, drains, ponds, and other water bodies, in addition to flood protection works. He noted that the acquisition of these machines by the state government would go a long way in mitigating the hardships faced by people due to severe floods.
Water Management Concerns
Addressing water-management issues, Mann highlighted that the maximum water level of the Bhakra Dam is 1,680 feet, and on April 26, it was recorded at 1,594 feet. He stressed that with paddy sowing set to begin from June 1, water release must be carefully planned in view of the approaching monsoon. The Chief Minister stated, "Since the state is all set to start the sowing of paddy crops from June 1, maximum water should be released from the Bhakra Dam keeping in mind the monsoon season ahead." He added that by May 31, ongoing work on new and revived watercourses in the state will be completed, after which an additional 5,000 cusecs of water will be required for irrigation purposes.
These measures underscore the Punjab government's proactive approach to flood management and water resource planning, aiming to safeguard both agricultural activities and public safety during the monsoon season.
