Rampaging Tusker Evades Capture, Crosses State Border
A rogue elephant, on a destructive spree in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district since the beginning of the year, claimed two more lives on Friday. The massive animal managed to evade a large-scale operation involving over 300 forest personnel and has now reportedly crossed into neighbouring Odisha.
A Desperate Chase and Narrow Escape
The forest department's massive team, armed with dart guns, power-charged guns, sticks, and other equipment, has been engaged in a desperate bid to tranquillise and capture the problematic tusker. The chase turned perilous when the aggressive elephant almost trampled a forester to death, showcasing the extreme danger posed by the animal. Despite their efforts and numbers, the jumbo successfully dodged tranquilliser darts and continued its rampage.
Friday's tragic incidents have pushed the total number of people killed by this single elephant to 19. Additionally, 10 people have been injured in its attacks. Authorities believe the male elephant is in a state of musth—a periodic condition in bull elephants marked by increased aggression and hormonal changes—and has been separated from its herd, which likely contributes to its erratic and violent behaviour.

This incident highlights the severe and ongoing human-elephant conflict in the region. The situation in Jharkhand has been particularly grim over the past few weeks. In the last 23 days alone, the state has witnessed a total of 27 deaths due to elephant attacks, a statistic that underscores the scale of the crisis facing local communities.
The elephant's movement into Odisha now transfers the immediate threat and the operational challenge to the forest authorities of the neighbouring state.
