South Korea Factory Fire: 10 Dead, Dozens Injured in Daejeon Blaze; 4 Missing
A tragic fire at an auto parts factory in Daejeon, South Korea, has resulted in 10 fatalities, with dozens injured and four individuals still missing. The blaze, which erupted on Friday afternoon, March 20, 2026, spread rapidly, possibly due to an explosion, leading to a large-scale emergency operation involving over 500 firefighters, police, and rescue personnel.
Details of the Incident and Rescue Efforts
The fire was reported at approximately 1:18 PM local time on Friday. Witnesses described an explosion that caused thick gray smoke to billow from the complex, with some workers forced to jump from the building to escape. Fire Chief Nam Deuk-woo of Daejeon's Daedeok district stated that the blaze destroyed a factory building, initially preventing entry due to collapse fears.
Rescue operations intensified late Friday after officials deployed unmanned firefighting robots to cool the structure and conduct safety inspections. By Saturday morning, the remains of 10 people were recovered: one on the second floor and nine in what is believed to have been a gym on the third floor. Nam indicated that the four missing workers are likely trapped beneath collapsed rubble, with further inspections planned before debris removal.
Injuries and Emergency Response
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, 59 people were injured, including 25 in serious condition. Officials have not confirmed if any injuries are life-threatening. Injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to broken bones from jumping, with 28 individuals hospitalized and four undergoing surgeries.
The emergency response involved about 120 vehicles and pieces of equipment, such as aircraft, an unmanned water cannon vehicle, and two firefighting robots for hard-to-reach areas. Firefighters also focused on preventing the blaze from spreading to adjacent facilities and isolated over 100 kilograms of highly reactive chemicals recovered from the site.
Investigation and Official Reactions
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities noting it spread quickly, possibly due to an explosion. Police have identified one of the deceased workers, while genetic testing is being conducted on the others.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called for the full mobilization of personnel and equipment to contain the fire and support rescue operations, highlighting the national significance of the tragedy.
This incident underscores the risks in industrial settings and the critical role of emergency preparedness in mitigating such disasters.
