Kharge: Modi govt lost trust, failed on all fronts

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led central government on Monday, asserting that it has lost the trust of the people and failed on all fronts. Speaking to reporters, Kharge listed various issues including unemployment, inflation, and agrarian distress as evidence of the government's shortcomings.

No Comment on Karnataka Cabinet

However, when asked about the ongoing discussions regarding the formation of a new cabinet in Karnataka under Chief Minister-designate D K Shivakumar, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief declined to comment. He stated that the party would follow due process and make decisions at the appropriate time.

Wide-Ranging Criticism

Kharge's remarks come amid growing opposition unity against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the 2024 general elections. He accused the government of undermining democratic institutions, suppressing dissent, and failing to deliver on its promises. The Congress president also highlighted the rise in prices of essential commodities and the lack of job opportunities for youth.

“The Modi government has completely lost the confidence of the people. It has failed on economic, social, and political fronts. The country is facing a serious crisis, and the government is only interested in protecting its own image,” Kharge said.

Opposition Unity

Kharge's statements are part of a broader strategy by the Congress to position itself as the principal challenger to the BJP. The party has been reaching out to regional parties to build a united opposition front. However, internal dynamics within the Congress, especially in states like Karnataka, remain a challenge.

In Karnataka, the Congress is set to form the government after winning the assembly elections. D K Shivakumar, a key party leader, is expected to take over as Chief Minister. The cabinet formation has been a subject of intense speculation, with various factions vying for positions. Kharge’s refusal to comment indicates the party’s cautious approach to avoid internal discord.

The Congress chief’s criticism of the Modi government is likely to set the tone for the upcoming election campaign. With the opposition seeking to capitalize on public discontent, the political landscape is expected to heat up in the coming months.
