Aung San Suu Kyi Moved to House Arrest Amid Prisoner Amnesty
State television and Myanmar's military information office announced on Thursday night that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest. Accompanying the announcement was a photo showing the 80-year-old leader in a traditional white blouse and skirt, seated on a wooden bench facing two unidentified men in uniform. While displayed on the TV broadcast, it remains unclear when or where the photo was taken. Suu Kyi has been in detention since the military seized power on February 1, 2021, and this marks the first official image of her released since a court appearance in May 2021. Earlier on Thursday, authorities announced a reduction in her prison sentence—now totaling 18 years—as part of a wider amnesty for 1,519 prisoners to mark the Buddhist holiday of "Kason." Sentences for those remaining in custody were reportedly cut by one-sixth.
