After its first trial run on March 29 on the North–South corridor, the Surat Metro achieved another milestone by conducting a trial run on the East–West corridor on Thursday. This development marks significant progress in the city's metro rail project, which aims to enhance urban mobility.
Trial Run Details
The trial run was carried out on a 6.5km stretch where construction work for seven stations has been completed. The route covered Bhesan through Ugat Varigruh, Palanpur Road, LP Savani School, Performing Arts Centre, and the Adajan area. This stretch is part of the larger East–West corridor that will eventually have a total of 18 stations between Bhesan and Saroli.
Project Overview
The Surat Metro project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 12,020 crore. It will feature 38 stations across two corridors spanning a total distance of 40.35km. The North–South corridor and the East–West corridor are designed to connect key areas of the city, providing efficient and modern public transportation.
With the completion of this trial run, the project moves closer to operational readiness. The metro system is expected to reduce traffic congestion and provide a reliable alternative for commuters in Surat, one of Gujarat's fastest-growing cities.
