The Tamil Nadu Federation of Pastoral People's Sangam organized a vibrant cultural event in Velani village, Sivaganga district, on Sunday morning. This gathering celebrated Pongal and marked the upcoming 2026 International Year of the Rangelands and Pastoralists.
Community Celebration and Rituals
Palmyra climbers and farmers came together for the festival. The event started with 'Patti Pongal,' a traditional ritual for livestock well-being. Participants cooked pongal and offered it to goats, expressing gratitude to nature and animals that support their livelihoods.
After the ceremony, the group prayed to the local deity. They then held a discussion on organic cultivation methods. This conversation aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices among the community.
Focus on Migrant Worker Rights
The gathering also addressed issues faced by migrant workers. TFPPS president Rajiv Gandhi emphasized the event's goal to focus on workers at a grassroots level. He highlighted pastoralists' commitment to maintaining ecological balance and sustainable farming.
In recent times, several pastoralists from Sivaganga and other districts encountered legal problems due to wage misunderstandings. To prevent such issues, the discussion included explanations of labour laws and guidelines. This information aimed to clarify pay cheques and salaries for migrant workers, avoiding future confusion.
Awards and Future Collaboration
An awards ceremony recognized individuals who created the best kolam art at their homes for Pongal. The event fostered community ties with migrant workers ahead of their seasonal migration to the region. Participants collaborated on plans for the coming year, strengthening bonds within the pastoral community.
This cultural gathering served as a platform for celebration, education, and solidarity. It underscored the importance of pastoralists' roles in sustainable agriculture and ecological preservation, setting a positive tone for the 2026 International Year of the Rangelands and Pastoralists.
