Jamshedpur: Two baskets containing two cobras were found abandoned in front of the Tatanagar railway station main entrance on Sunday. The lids of both baskets were open, raising immediate concern among passersby.
Discovery and Initial Reaction
Onlookers first mistook the baskets for trash but raised an alarm after spotting the snakes. Station authorities were quickly alerted, and they promptly notified the forest department and wildlife experts to handle the situation.
Snake Catcher's Assessment
“The snakes belong to a cobra species, locally known as ‘Gehunua Saanp’,” said snake catcher Chotu, who was among the first responders. The species is known for its venomous nature and is commonly found in the region.
Rescue and Release
The Jamshedpur forest department took custody of the reptiles and later released them in the Dalma forest reserve, a protected area that provides a safe habitat for wildlife. The release was carried out away from human settlements to ensure public safety and the snakes' well-being.
Investigation Underway
An investigation has been initiated to determine how the baskets ended up at the station and who might be responsible. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to gather more information.
This incident highlights the need for awareness about wildlife and proper handling of such situations. The forest department has urged the public to report any similar findings immediately rather than attempting to handle the animals themselves.
