A joyful family picnic turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for an Ahmedabad family living in the United Kingdom when 28-year-old Rushabh Patel lost his life while rescuing two persons from drowning. In the days following his death, a community fundraiser launched for his family has drawn an overwhelming response, raising more than Rs 30 lakh (26,000 pounds) to support his wife and infant daughter.

Background of the Victim

Originally from Pundhra village near Ahmedabad, Rushabh had settled in Milton Keynes with his wife, Mili, and their 18-month-old daughter, Vrumi. Friends and relatives describe him as a devoted family man who had moved to Britain with dreams of building a better future for his loved ones.

Without a second thought, Rushabh jumped into the water to help them. He successfully rescued both individuals. However, during the rescue effort, he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was airlifted to Milton Keynes University Hospital, where doctors fought for nearly two days to save him. Despite intensive medical efforts and prayers from family and friends, Rushabh died on May 28.

Community Response

The tragedy has resonated deeply with both the Indian and local communities. Friends have described his final act as one of extraordinary courage and selflessness. A fundraiser launched in his memory states that his last act on earth was saving others.

Organ Donation

Even after his death, Rushabh continued to give. Through organ donation, he is believed to have helped five to six people receive a second chance at life, according to the fundraising appeal.

Use of Funds

The money being raised will be used to meet funeral expenses, support immediate family needs, and help secure the future of his young daughter, who will now grow up without her father, said the donation note on a fundraising portal.
