Uttar Pradesh's population has grown by nearly 8.4 crore over the past 25 years, reaching an estimated 25 crore in 2026 ahead of the 2027 Census, according to provisional estimates and past Census data. The state's population was recorded at 16.61 crore in the 2001 Census, comprising 8.75 crore males and 7.86 crore females, while the number of households stood at 2.57 crore. By the 2011 Census, the population rose to 19.98 crore, comprising 10.44 crore males and 9.53 crore females, with households increasing to 3.34 crore.

Population Growth and Household Trends

Provisional estimates prepared ahead of the 2027 Census indicate that Uttar Pradesh's population has now reached 25 crore, while the number of households has touched 5 crore. This means the state has added nearly 8.4 crore people and more than 2.4 crore households since 2001. The figures also point to rapid urbanization. According to an official source, urban households now account for nearly 25% of all households in the state, compared with 23% in 2011 and 21% in 2001.

Lucknow's Population Surge

The state capital's population crossed 60.40 lakh in 2026, up from 45.89 lakh in the 2011 Census and 36.81 lakh in 2001. Over the 25-year period from 2001 to 2026, Lucknow's population increased by 23.59 lakh. It is worth noting that following the completion of the five-month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, the number of registered voters in Lucknow district stood at 30.80 lakh, as published in April 2026.

Disparity Between Population and Voters

Assembly constituency-wise figures show a wide gap between population and registered voters. Malihabad has a population of 6.23 lakh and 3.68 lakh registered voters, while Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) has a population of 6.35 lakh and 4.95 lakh voters. Sarojini Nagar has a population of 7.65 lakh and 6.02 lakh voters; Lucknow West, 6.42 lakh population and 4.70 lakh voters; Lucknow North, 6.53 lakh population and 4.99 lakh voters; Lucknow East, 6.66 lakh population and 4.62 lakh voters; Lucknow Central, 7.15 lakh population and 3.72 lakh voters; Lucknow Cantonment, 6.63 lakh population and 3.65 lakh voters; and Mohanlalganj, 6.73 lakh population and 3.59 lakh voters.
