United States Ambassador to Pakistan Natalie Baker has stated that President Donald Trump placed an 'extraordinary trust' in Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, crediting them for the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Baker emphasized that the truce was a significant diplomatic achievement facilitated by the leadership of both countries.
US Envoy Highlights Trust in Pakistani Leadership
Baker remarked that the ceasefire agreement, which has brought a halt to hostilities along the Line of Control, was possible due to the personal involvement and credibility of General Munir and PM Sharif. 'President Trump has extraordinary trust in both General Munir and Prime Minister Sharif. Their commitment to peace and stability in the region played a pivotal role in achieving this truce,' she said.
The ambassador also reiterated the mutual benefits of a strong bilateral relationship, stating, 'A strong Pakistan is good for America, and a strong America is good for Pakistan.' She underscored that the United States views Pakistan as a key partner in promoting regional security and economic cooperation.
Ceasefire Brings Relief to Border Regions
The India-Pakistan ceasefire, announced earlier this year, has been widely welcomed by communities living near the border. The reduction in cross-border firing has led to a decrease in civilian casualties and allowed for the resumption of daily life in affected areas. Both nations have committed to upholding the ceasefire and engaging in dialogue to address underlying issues.
Baker's comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen US-Pakistan ties, which have seen renewed engagement under the Trump administration. The envoy praised Pakistan's efforts in counterterrorism and its role in facilitating peace in Afghanistan, noting that these contributions enhance regional stability.
General Asim Munir, who took command of the Pakistani army in 2022, has been instrumental in maintaining military discipline and pursuing a policy of constructive engagement with neighboring countries. PM Shehbaz Sharif, leading a coalition government, has prioritized economic recovery and foreign relations.
The US ambassador's statement signals Washington's continued support for Pakistan's role in fostering peace in South Asia. Analysts suggest that the trust placed in Pakistani leadership could lead to expanded cooperation in trade, security, and energy sectors. However, they caution that long-term stability will require sustained dialogue between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan's foreign office welcomed the ambassador's remarks, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence and regional harmony. The development marks a positive step in US-Pakistan relations, which have experienced fluctuations over the past decade.
