WUC Delegation Meets Swedish Officials
The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has released its weekly brief highlighting international advocacy efforts against China's newly implemented Ethnic Unity Law. During a three-day visit to Stockholm from June 26 to 28, senior WUC representatives met Swedish officials, lawmakers, and civil society groups to discuss human rights in East Turkistan.
The delegation included WUC President Turghunjan Alawdun, Vice President Zumretay Arkin, UzDM President Dolkun Isa, and Sweden Uyghur Union President Bahtinor Abdurehim. They held discussions with Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, MP Yusuf Aydin, and PEN Sweden, arguing that the Ethnic Unity Law institutionalizes cultural assimilation and repression.
Concerns Over Detained Intellectuals
The delegation highlighted concerns over detained Uyghur intellectuals and attended a community event commemorating poet and activist Kuresh Kosen. The campaign continued in Paris, where Dolkun Isa addressed the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty from June 30 to July 2, drawing attention to Uyghur political prisoners at risk of death sentences.
Coordinated Global Protests
China's Ethnic Unity Law came into force on July 1, triggering coordinated protests by Uyghur organizations in Berlin, Brussels, London, Washington DC, Sydney, Tokyo, Zurich, and Los Angeles. In the US, 14 bipartisan House members urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to condemn the legislation.
On July 2, WUC Vice President Zumretay Arkin participated in a panel at the University of Zurich on transnational repression, discussing challenges democracies face when authoritarian governments target diaspora communities.
