Environmental Advocate Condemns Massive Coastal Destruction for Minimal Corporate Gains in Andhra Pradesh

In a powerful statement from Visakhapatnam, environmental advocate Satyanarayana Bolisetty has issued a stark warning, declaring that lakhs of crores of rupees worth of invaluable marine wealth are being systematically sacrificed for marginal corporate profits. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Bolisetty urgently called upon the high court to appoint independent experts to conduct a comprehensive assessment and quantification of the extensive coastal destruction plaguing the region.

A Call for Unity Against a Toxic Siege

"I appeal to the citizens of Andhra Pradesh to stand united against the toxic siege of our coastline, which stretches from Srikakulam to Kakinada," Bolisetty implored. He emphasized the severe economic and ecological imbalance, stating, "For the sake of generating a few hundred crores in industrial profit, we are losing lakhs of crores worth of marine biodiversity and essential ecological services." According to Bolisetty, the current industrial model is fundamentally flawed—not only is it highly polluting, but it is also economically and ecologically bankrupt, as it trades away permanent natural wealth for fleeting corporate gains.

These remarks are directly connected to a public interest litigation (PIL) that Bolisetty has filed in the high court, seeking legal intervention to address this critical environmental issue.

Human Cost and Official Acknowledgement of Negligence

Highlighting the devastating human cost of this environmental negligence, Bolisetty pointed out that the resulting tragedy has recently been acknowledged by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment, Pawan Kalyan, during meetings with government officials. The situation in affected villages is dire and alarming.

  • In villages such as Tadi in Anakapalli district, pollution has reached catastrophic levels, with reports indicating that almost every household has at least one cancer patient.
  • Residents are suffering from a range of severe health issues, including chronic skin diseases, contaminated groundwater, and a documented rise in miscarriages.

Systemic Failures and Unchecked Pollution

Bolisetty detailed a systemic failure in environmental management, criticizing the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) for its role in the crisis. "For over a decade, the GVMC has permitted nearly 200 million litres of untreated sewage to be discharged into the sea every single day," he revealed. Shockingly, there has been no reduction in this sewage discharge since 2020, exacerbating the environmental and public health disaster.

He posed a critical question to authorities: "Why should the officers responsible for this failure not be penalised or dismissed from service?" This query underscores the urgent need for accountability and immediate corrective action to halt the ongoing destruction and protect both the coastal ecosystem and the health of local communities.
