The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has rolled out an ambitious plan to significantly enhance the city's green cover by targeting open plots along its metro network. In a dedicated drive separate from its monsoon planting, the civic body aims to plant and nurture 9,000 saplings on these lands, with an estimated budget of Rs 10 crore.
Filling the Greenery Gap Along the Metro Corridor
This new initiative comes as a follow-up to the corporation's large-scale Mission 4 Million Trees campaign undertaken during the monsoon of 2025, which saw the planting of a staggering 40 lakh trees across Ahmedabad. However, officials identified that open plots flanking the newly developed metro lines were largely overlooked during that massive drive. To address this gap, the AMC's parks and gardens department has now taken up the specific task of greening these strategic spaces.
Project Details and Year-Round Maintenance
The department has already floated a tender for the comprehensive project. According to an official, the planting activity will be executed on open land located on both sides of the metro route, which traverses through every zone of the city. The scope of work is not limited to just new plantations.
"Existing plantations will be upgraded and beautified as part of this project," the official stated. "There is also a plan to introduce trees in the central verges. Work on this project is designed to continue throughout the year, ensuring proper care and maintenance."
Surprise Tender and Seasonal Challenges
Interestingly, the move to issue the tender has raised some eyebrows within the AMC circles. Sources pointed out that the tender was "suddenly floated" this month. Given the climatic challenges of the region, planting and nurturing trees outside the conducive monsoon season is considered difficult and resource-intensive. This timing has made the tender announcement a surprise to many, highlighting the administration's determined push for urban afforestation despite the logistical hurdles.
The project underscores a sustained commitment by the Ahmedabad civic body to expand the city's green lungs, improve air quality, and beautify public infrastructure, with the bustling metro corridor becoming the latest focus area for environmental enhancement.
