Ahmedabad's Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary Hosts World Wetlands Day Awareness Programme

An extensive awareness programme was organised at the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in Ahmedabad on Monday to commemorate World Wetlands Day. The event, conducted by the Wildlife Division, Sanand, aimed to highlight the critical importance of wetland conservation with a strong emphasis on community involvement in protecting these fragile ecosystems.

Community Participation and Official Insights

The programme witnessed robust participation from over 200 individuals, including community leaders, villagers from surrounding areas, village presidents, and presidents of eco-development committees from eco-sensitive zone villages, alongside forest officials. Sakira Begum, deputy conservator of forest (wildlife), Sanand, delivered a keynote address, speaking about the cultural heritage of wetlands, their profound ecological significance, and the crucial role that local communities play in their ongoing protection and preservation.

Farmer Outreach and Sustainable Practices

In the afternoon, a separate outreach initiative specifically targeted farmers from eco-sensitive villages, attracting more than 150 participants. Kalpesh Mistry, programme manager of a charitable trust, highlighted the numerous benefits of adopting natural farming practices. Farmers from Khicha, Vakariya, and Devthal villages shared their firsthand experiences with organic and sustainable agriculture, providing practical insights into eco-friendly farming methods.

Educational Activities and Environmental Pledges

A street play was staged to effectively draw public attention to the adverse impact of chemical fertilisers on soil health and the surrounding wetland environments. Forest officials also addressed the pressing issue of plastic pollution, administered the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) pledge to encourage sustainable living, and distributed dustbins to promote responsible waste management practices among the local community.
