In a significant move to prepare for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a comprehensive initiative to enhance the city's air quality standards. The civic body is particularly focusing on reducing pollution emissions from construction activities, which have been identified as major contributors to environmental degradation.
Mandatory Construction Site Regulations
The cornerstone of this environmental campaign is the implementation of the Good Construction Practices Policy, which imposes strict requirements on large-scale construction projects. According to the new regulations, all construction sites with a built-up area exceeding 20,000 square meters must install sophisticated monitoring equipment including dust sensors, air quality display boards, and CCTV surveillance systems.
Current Implementation Status
Presently, approximately 140 construction sites throughout Ahmedabad have been equipped with advanced air quality sensors that provide real-time pollution data. These installations are subject to regular monitoring by municipal authorities to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
The AMC has demonstrated serious enforcement of these regulations through substantial financial penalties. During the 2024–25 fiscal year, the corporation collected Rs 1.71 crore in penalties from non-compliant sites. The current financial year (2025–26) has already seen Rs 1.16 crore recovered from violators, indicating continued rigorous enforcement of pollution control measures.
Scientific Identification of Pollution Hotspots
Through systematic environmental analysis, the municipal corporation has scientifically identified and designated nine critical air pollution hotspots across Ahmedabad. These high-priority areas include:
- Pirana
- Rakhial
- Raikhad
- Bopal
- Vatva
- SP Stadium
- Chandkheda
- Maninagar
Additionally, the AMC has identified 16 construction and demolition waste collection centers as significant contributors to particulate pollution, requiring special attention and management strategies.
Advanced Pollution Control Infrastructure
Utilizing financial grants from both the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and the 15th Finance Commission, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has deployed sophisticated pollution mitigation equipment throughout the city.
Mist Machine Deployment
The civic body has strategically positioned 16 truck-mounted mist machines across identified pollution zones. Of these specialized vehicles:
- Six machines operate continuously at the Pirana dumpsite and surrounding areas to suppress dust emissions
- Ten additional machines patrol designated pollution-prone routes throughout the city
Mechanical Road Cleaning Operations
To further combat airborne particulate matter, the AMC has deployed 62 mechanical road sweeping machines that operate regularly across Ahmedabad's road network. These specialized vehicles play a crucial role in reducing dust resuspension and maintaining cleaner urban surfaces.
This multi-faceted approach represents Ahmedabad's comprehensive strategy to transform its environmental landscape ahead of the prestigious 2030 Commonwealth Games, positioning the city as a model for urban air quality management in India.
