Bengaluru West City Corporation Unveils Five-Point Plan for Sankey Tank Revival
The Bengaluru West City Corporation has announced a comprehensive five-point plan aimed at the restoration and long-term preservation of the iconic Sankey Tank. This historic water body, once a vital source of drinking water and a thriving ecosystem, has faced severe degradation due to pollution, encroachment, and neglect. The new initiative seeks to address these issues through a multi-pronged approach.
Key Components of the Plan
- Pollution Control: Immediate measures to prevent sewage and industrial waste from entering the tank. This includes installing treatment plants and regular monitoring of water quality.
- Desilting and Dredging: Removal of accumulated silt and garbage to restore the tank's depth and water-holding capacity. The process will be carried out in phases to minimize ecological disruption.
- Encroachment Removal: Strict action against illegal constructions and encroachments around the tank's periphery. The corporation will demarcate the boundary and create a buffer zone.
- Biodiversity Enhancement: Planting native species of trees and aquatic plants to revive the local ecosystem. Plans include creating a bird sanctuary and butterfly garden to attract wildlife.
- Community Engagement: Involving local residents, NGOs, and experts in conservation efforts. Regular cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns will be organized to foster a sense of ownership.
Timeline and Funding
The corporation has allocated a budget of Rs 50 crore for the project, with work expected to commence within three months. The first phase, focusing on desilting and pollution control, is targeted for completion by the end of the year. Subsequent phases will address biodiversity and community initiatives over the next two years. Officials have assured that the plan will be executed transparently, with periodic progress reports made public.
Environmentalists have welcomed the move but caution that sustained efforts are needed to ensure success. "Sankey Tank is a precious heritage. This plan is a good start, but it must be implemented rigorously and with long-term vision," said Dr. Meena R., a local ecologist. The corporation has also invited suggestions from citizens via its website, aiming to incorporate feedback into the final blueprint.
