Bihar Grapples with Intensifying Heatwave as Temperatures Soar Near 40°C
The state of Bihar has experienced a significant escalation in heat conditions over recent days, with maximum temperatures climbing close to 40 degrees Celsius across several key districts. Major urban centers including Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Sheikhpura, and Rohtas have all recorded these sweltering readings, marking a pronounced shift toward summer weather patterns.
IMD Issues Weather Advisory with Mixed Forecast
While most districts have endured predominantly dry and hot conditions, isolated light rainfall occurred in certain parts of Bihar on Sunday. In response to the evolving weather situation, the India Meteorological Department has released an official forecast predicting light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning activity continuing through April 9.
Sanjay Kumar, a meteorologist stationed at the IMD office in Patna, provided detailed insights into the current climatic trends. He indicated that summer temperatures this year are projected to surpass the normal thirty-year average significantly. Kumar specifically noted that temperatures may exceed 40 degrees Celsius during April, though he clarified that formal heatwave conditions are unlikely to develop before May arrives.
Public Health Recommendations and Agricultural Guidance
The IMD expert offered crucial advice for residents coping with the escalating heat. Kumar emphasized the importance of maintaining proper hydration and minimizing unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak temperature hours. For the agricultural community, he provided specific guidance suggesting farmers complete harvesting their rabi crops promptly and implement secure storage measures to protect their produce from the intensifying heat.
Atmospheric Conditions Driving Weather Patterns
Kumar explained the meteorological factors influencing Bihar's current weather scenario. "Current instability in the upper atmosphere caused by cyclonic circulation is expected to increase cloud cover substantially over the next forty-eight hours," he stated. This atmospheric system is projected to generate rainfall across most districts specifically on April 8 and April 9, resulting in a temporary reduction in temperatures throughout the state.
However, this relief period will be brief according to meteorological projections. Temperatures are expected to begin climbing again starting April 11, returning to elevated levels as the weather system moves through the region.
Detailed District-Level Forecast and Temperature Ranges
The IMD bulletin issued on Sunday outlined specific geographical areas likely to experience precipitation. Rainfall is forecast primarily for north-eastern, south-western, south-eastern, north-central, and south-central regions of Bihar. Districts identified for potential rainfall include:
- Patna
- Nawada
- Araria
- Purnia
- Rohtas
- Bhojpur
- Jamui
- Banka
- Muzaffarpur
- Sitamarhi
- Buxar
Looking ahead to the coming week, meteorological projections indicate the state's maximum temperature will fluctuate between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will range from 20 to 26 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, Dehri in Rohtas district recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38.2 degrees Celsius, while Agwanpur in Saharsa registered the lowest minimum temperature at 19.7 degrees Celsius.
The evolving weather pattern presents a complex scenario for Bihar residents, combining immediate heat stress with anticipated temporary relief through precipitation, followed by a return to elevated temperatures as April progresses.
