Bishnoi Family Hospitalized After Ending 'Save Khejri' Fast in Jaisalmer

The mother and wife of the late environmental activist Radheshyam Pemani Bishnoi were hospitalized on Sunday in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, after their health deteriorated significantly hours after breaking a prolonged fast. The women had been abstaining from food and water since February 3 in solidarity with the ongoing 'Save Khejri' mass sit-in and hunger strike in Bikaner.

Health Crisis Following Fast Break

Ratni Devi, the mother of Radheshyam Bishnoi, was admitted to Priya Hospital in Jaisalmer, while his wife, Nirma Bishnoi, received primary treatment at a facility in Pokhran before being discharged. Both women ended their fast on Sunday following intervention by religious figures, but their conditions worsened rapidly after they began eating again.

From her hospital bed, Ratni Devi made a poignant statement, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to the environmental cause. "We don't care about our lives. My son Radheshyam gave his life to the cause of saving environment and forests. We have just one demand: that the government make strict laws to save khejri trees. Until concrete steps are taken for environmental protection, our struggle will continue," she declared.

Medical Condition and Treatment

Dr. Rajeshwari Dhandev at Priya Hospital provided details about Ratni Devi's critical condition. "Due to staying hungry for three consecutive days, she developed cramps and swelling in her intestines. Because of this, she is experiencing vomiting and extreme weakness. Currently, we are keeping her on glucose and a liquid diet, and her condition is being continuously monitored," explained Dr. Dhandev.

The medical team highlighted that prolonged fasting had severely impacted Ratni Devi's health, leading to complications that required immediate hospitalization and intensive care.

Background of the Save Khejri Movement

The Save Khejri movement has gained momentum in Rajasthan, with activists protesting to protect the khejri tree, which holds cultural and ecological significance in the region. The mass sit-in and hunger strike in Bikaner have drawn widespread attention to environmental conservation issues.

Radheshyam Pemani Bishnoi, whose family continues his legacy, died in a road accident last year while attempting to protect wildlife from poachers. His sacrifice has inspired many, including his family members, to take up the cause of environmental protection with renewed vigor.

The hospitalization of Ratni Devi and Nirma Bishnoi underscores the personal risks and sacrifices involved in environmental activism. Their condition remains under close medical supervision as the Save Khejri movement continues to advocate for stronger governmental action on forest conservation.
