Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, conducted a detailed inspection of ongoing plantation and greening projects across the Union Territory on Sunday. The visit aimed to assess the progress and health of saplings planted by various civic departments.
High Survival Rates at Rajendra Park
Beginning his tour at Rajendra Park, Governor Kataria reviewed the work carried out by the Municipal Corporation and forest department. He expressed considerable satisfaction with the health and survival rate of the young trees planted there. Officials reported an impressive survival rate ranging between 80% and 95% for the saplings.
Emphasizing that planting was only the first step, the Governor directed the concerned officials to ensure sustained and meticulous upkeep. He specifically stressed the importance of regular maintenance activities essential for robust plant growth. These include systematic weeding, hoeing, watering, and other crucial silvicultural operations.
Extensive Plantation Along Key Roads
Kataria then proceeded to inspect the plantation work executed by the engineering department. His focus was on the area near the High Court entry point and along the stretch of Jan Marg. Here, a significant greening effort has seen the planting of over 30,000 saplings, contributing to the city's green cover and aesthetic appeal.
Spotlight on Miyawaki and Garden Sites
The Governor's itinerary also included specialized plantation sites. He visited the high-density Miyawaki plantation at the Rose Nursery in Sector 23. The Miyawaki method is known for creating dense, native forests in a short time. Following this, he inspected the plantation area within the Fragrance Garden located in Sector 36, reviewing the diversity and health of the plant species there.
Finally, at the site behind the famous Rock Garden along Kaimbwala road, Governor Kataria took note of a special eco-restoration project. The forest department is undertaking efforts to revive a sewage-affected forest patch in this area. The Governor appreciated the department's work in restoring this damaged ecosystem, highlighting the importance of such remedial environmental actions.
The comprehensive inspection underscores the administration's commitment to enhancing Chandigarh's reputation as a green and well-planned city. The focus on post-plantation care indicates a shift towards ensuring long-term sustainability and impact of urban forestry initiatives.
