Chandigarh Witnesses Sharp Temperature Plunge, Winter Chill Intensifies
Chandigarh has experienced a significant and sudden drop in temperatures over the past 24 hours, with the night temperature plummeting by nearly 5 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day. This abrupt decline has dramatically intensified the winter chill across the city, making late-night and early morning hours feel substantially colder and more uncomfortable for residents.
Meteorological Data Reveals Below-Normal Temperatures
According to the latest reports from the meteorological department, the maximum temperature recorded in Chandigarh on Tuesday was 14.7 degrees Celsius. This reading is approximately four degrees Celsius below the normal range expected for this time of the year. The minimum temperature settled at a chilly 5.3 degrees Celsius, which is nearly two degrees Celsius below the seasonal average. Additionally, the night temperature was recorded at 10.6 degrees Celsius, highlighting the persistent cold conditions.
Weather officials have attributed this sustained chill to several factors, including high humidity levels and residual moisture from recent rainfall. These elements have combined to create an environment where cold winds feel more biting and discomfort is markedly increased. Dense fog was reported in various parts of the city during the morning hours, further reducing visibility and exacerbating the cold conditions for commuters and residents alike.
Weather Forecast Predicts Continued Cold Spell
The weather department has forecast similar conditions to persist over the next few days. For January 25 and 26, Chandigarh is expected to experience mostly cloudy skies accompanied by moderate to dense fog during night and morning hours. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures may remain low, ranging between 7 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead from January 27 onwards, the forecast indicates the possibility of a partly cloudy sky with chances of light rain or thunderstorms. These weather patterns are expected to keep temperatures subdued, potentially extending the prevailing cold spell across the region. Officials have issued advisories urging residents to exercise caution during early morning and late-night travel due to fog-related visibility issues. People are also encouraged to take adequate precautions against the cold to safeguard their health.
Rainfall Contributes to Seasonal Chill
Adding to the wintry conditions, the city recorded 27.1mm of rainfall on Friday. With this precipitation, the seasonal rainfall now stands at 92.2% above normal levels. This excess rainfall has significantly contributed to the heightened chill and moisture in the atmosphere, making the cold feel more intense and pervasive throughout Chandigarh.
