Chennai Hosts Educational Wetlands Appreciation Walk for Students and Public
In Chennai, a diverse group including college students, environmental conservation enthusiasts, and the general public dedicated a productive forenoon to learning about wetlands and their critical importance. The event took place at Adyar Tholkappia Poonga, where the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) organized an engaging 'appreciation walk' on Monday.
Interactive Activities and Learning Experiences
The two-hour walk, held to commemorate World Wetlands Day, spanned the entire eco-park and featured a variety of interactive activities designed to educate and inspire participants. These included quiz contests, informative lectures, photo sessions, and a fun bingo game, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.
For many students, this was a unique learning opportunity that went beyond textbooks. K Srinath, a student pursuing an MSc in Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, shared his insights, stating, "I learnt about the Ramsar Convention and the number of Ramsar sites in Tamil Nadu." He added, "We saw how breathing roots work and what supports them, a concept we only read about in books."
Expert Insights on Wetland Importance
The tour was inaugurated by MSSRF director Soumya Swaminathan, who emphasized the multifaceted importance of wetlands. She highlighted their roles as natural flood buffers and vital ecosystems that support livelihoods, underscoring why conservation efforts are essential.
Rupesh K Bhomia, MSSRF director for wetlands, explained the event's goal to TOI, saying, "The goal is to sensitize people to the necessity of wetlands in an engaging way." He pointed out the challenges, noting, "Owing to rapid urbanization and public negligence, there is always a need to preserve wetlands." Bhomia also revealed plans for future initiatives, adding, "We plan to conduct more such tours at other wetland locations too."
Additional Conservation Efforts in Chennai
In a related effort, a different nature walk followed by a clean-up drive was conducted at the Adyar Estuary. This activity was organized by the Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission in coordination with the Chennai Forest Division and the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, showcasing a collaborative approach to environmental preservation in the region.
Overall, the event successfully combined education with hands-on experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for wetlands among participants and highlighting ongoing conservation strategies in Chennai.
