In a remarkable display of wildlife conservation efforts, forest officials and veterinarians in Chhattisgarh successfully rescued a male elephant that had fallen and was unable to move on private farmland in Jashpur district. The intensive nine-hour operation culminated with the tusker regaining strength and walking safely back toward the forests of the neighboring Dharamjaigarh range to reunite with its herd.
Alert from Local Farmer Triggers Rescue Response
The incident unfolded when a local farmer discovered the distressed elephant early on Wednesday morning in the Nawapara area and immediately alerted authorities. According to Jashpur Divisional Forest Officer Shashi Kumar, the forest team from Pathalgaon range rushed to the location upon receiving the report.
Preliminary assessment by the forest officials indicated that the elephant was suffering from weakness in one of its legs, which prevented it from standing up. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, DFO Kumar coordinated with higher authorities to arrange urgent veterinary assistance.
Medical Examination and On-Spot Treatment
Wildlife veterinarian Dr. Ajith Kumar Pandey from the neighboring Raigarh district arrived at the scene with his medical team to conduct a thorough examination of the fallen pachyderm. The veterinary experts provided immediate treatment on the spot, which gradually improved the elephant's condition over several hours.
After approximately nine hours of continuous monitoring and care, the elephant began regaining its strength and eventually stood up independently. Forest officials reported that the animal then slowly moved away from the farmland, heading toward the forests of Dharamjaigarh division where its herd was located.

Throughout the rescue operation, forest staff advised villagers to maintain a safe distance to prevent any potential incidents. Officials also appealed to residents in the region to remain vigilant when elephants are sighted, avoid crowding around the animals, and immediately inform authorities about any wildlife emergencies.
