Cyclone Threat Looms Over Andaman & Nicobar Islands: IMD Issues Red Alert
Cyclone Alert for Andaman & Nicobar Islands: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm bells for the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a brewing weather system over the Southeast Bay of Bengal threatens to intensify into a cyclonic storm.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, the low-pressure area has already concentrated into a depression and is likely to intensify further while moving northwestwards. Fishermen and residents are being warned to exercise extreme caution over the coming days.

Impending Weather Fury

The weather office predicts that the system will cross the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 10, bringing with it:

  • Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the islands
  • Strong wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph
  • Rough to very rough sea conditions in the surrounding waters

Precautionary Measures Activated

Local authorities have swung into action, implementing standard operating procedures for such emergencies. The disaster management machinery has been put on high alert to deal with any eventualities that might arise from the severe weather conditions.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the deep sea areas of Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea until the situation improves. Those already at sea have been called back to safe harbors.

Regional Impact Assessment

While the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to bear the brunt of the weather system, the IMD is closely monitoring its path for potential impact on the eastern Indian coastline. Meteorological experts are tracking the system's development round the clock using satellite imagery and advanced weather modeling systems.

The timing of this weather development is particularly concerning as it coincides with the pre-monsoon period, when such systems typically gain strength from the warm ocean waters.
