NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert as Cyclone Mocha intensifies into a severe cyclonic storm, posing a significant threat to India's eastern coastline. The weather system is expected to bring destructive winds and torrential rainfall across multiple states, with authorities initiating large-scale evacuation measures.
Emergency Measures Activated
Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are on high alert, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deploying 25 teams across vulnerable regions. Fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the sea, while emergency shelters have been prepared to accommodate evacuees.
"The cyclone is likely to cause extensive damage to thatched houses, agricultural crops, and power lines in coastal areas," warned an IMD official during a press briefing.

Andhra Pradesh: Several districts including Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram are expected to experience wind speeds reaching 90-100 kmph, with extremely heavy rainfall predicted over the next 48 hours.
Odisha: The state government has put disaster management teams on standby, with special focus on Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur districts. Storm surges of 1-1.5 meters are anticipated during high tide.
Tamil Nadu: Northern coastal regions are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, though the direct impact is expected to be less severe compared to neighboring states.
