Delhi recorded a warmer-than-normal night on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature settling at 28.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city, warning of a possible heatwave in the coming days.
Temperature Trends
The maximum temperature on Tuesday was 41.2 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above normal. The humidity levels oscillated between 45% and 70%. The IMD has predicted a partly cloudy sky with strong surface winds for Wednesday, with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 42 degrees Celsius.
IMD Advisory
The IMD's yellow alert indicates that a heatwave is likely at isolated places in Delhi on Wednesday and Thursday. A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is at least 40 degrees Celsius and is 4.5 notches above normal. For Friday and Saturday, the IMD has forecast a mainly clear sky with the maximum temperature expected to remain around 42 degrees Celsius.
The department has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak afternoon hours, and wear light-colored cotton clothes. The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded in the 'moderate' category at 175.
Impact on Daily Life
The warmer nights have made it difficult for people to sleep comfortably, especially those without air conditioning. The Delhi government has asked power discoms to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the hot weather. The IMD's yellow alert serves as a cautionary measure for the public to take necessary precautions against the heat.
