IMD Forecasts Dense Fog in Kanpur, North India; Temperature Fluctuations Expected
Dense Fog Alert for Kanpur, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan by IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant fog alert for several regions across North and East India. Residents of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including the Kanpur division, along with Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, and western Rajasthan, should brace for dense to very dense fog conditions in the coming days.

Temperature Fluctuations and Cold Wave Threat

Weather expert Sunil Pandey from CSA provided a detailed analysis, highlighting expected fluctuations in day and night temperatures across Uttar Pradesh, with Kanpur specifically mentioned. He noted that melting conditions are being observed not just during the night, morning, and evening, but now even during daytime hours. This unusual pattern is increasing the possibility of cold waves and cold days persisting in the region.

Recent data from Kanpur illustrates the prevailing chill. On Tuesday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 19.9 degrees Celsius. While this showed a slight rise from Monday's readings, the weather remained intensely cold for the local population. Wind patterns featured a south-eastern breeze moving at speeds between 2.8 kmph and 4.3 kmph.

A Brief Respite on New Year's Day

Amidst the cold spell, Kanpur witnessed a temporary break on Thursday, the first day of the new year. The morning began with light fog, which cleared by approximately 9 am. This allowed sunshine to break through and brighten the sky, offering much-needed warmth. The pleasant rays brought relief, with people venturing into open areas of their homes and public parks to enjoy the sun.

However, this respite is likely to be short-lived as per the IMD's forecast. The impending dense fog is expected to impact visibility significantly, potentially affecting:

  • Road and rail transportation across the warned states.
  • Flight schedules at major airports in the region.
  • Daily routines and outdoor activities for residents.

Authorities advise citizens to exercise caution while traveling, use appropriate fog lights on vehicles, and stay updated with the latest weather bulletins from the IMD. The combination of low visibility and fluctuating temperatures underscores the need for continued preparedness for severe winter conditions.
