Telangana Witnesses Unseasonal Early Rainfall, Meteorologists Point to Climate Patterns
In an unusual meteorological event, the state of Telangana recorded its first spell of rain on Monday, marking a shower that arrived earlier than typical seasonal expectations. Meteorologists have linked this premature precipitation to broader climate variability, noting that such weather activity is usually observed only after mid-March under normal conditions.
Weather System Analysis and Forecast
Weather officials explained that the rain resulted from an easterly wave moving westward from the Bay of Bengal, traversing across Tamil Nadu and Kerala before reaching Telangana. Y V Rama Rao, a senior meteorologist at the Telangana Development Planning Society, provided detailed insights: "The system, supported by easterly and south-easterly winds, transported significant moisture inland, which triggered light rain over various parts of Telangana. It is currently moving towards the Arabian Sea, and we anticipate isolated light showers over the next couple of days."
Rainfall Distribution Across Districts
The rainfall was not uniform, with certain districts experiencing heavier precipitation:
- Nirmal district recorded the highest rainfall of 42 mm at Ponkal in Mamda mandal.
- Doulthabad in Siddipet and Narnoor in Adilabad each received 34.5 mm.
- Asifabad logged 32 mm at Ginnedi.
- Several locations in Rangareddy, including Mamidipalle and Turkayamjal, received over 26 mm.
In Hyderabad, moderate showers were reported across multiple neighborhoods:
- South Hastinapuram in Hayathnagar recorded 17.5 mm.
- Bahadurpura received 14.5 mm.
- Rajendranagar saw up to 13.5 mm, with other areas witnessing light to moderate precipitation.
Official Alerts and Temperature Trends
In response to the weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in isolated districts, including:
- Adilabad
- Nirmal
- Rangareddy
- Medchal-Malkajgiri
- Sangareddy
This rain followed what officials described as an extended winter phase. Rao added context on temperature trends: "Minimum temperatures have recently ranged between 16°C and 18°C and may rise to 19°C–20°C by the weekend, with daytime temperatures climbing gradually."
Long-Term Climate Outlook and Expert Warnings
Looking ahead, meteorological experts are closely monitoring El Niño conditions, which could significantly influence weather patterns for the 2026 seasons. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather issued a cautionary note: "A strengthening El Niño may lead to a below-normal monsoon and more intense heatwaves. Specifically, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience above-normal summer temperatures."
This early rainfall event underscores the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns, potentially driven by global climate change. Residents and authorities are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and prepare for possible weather-related disruptions in the coming days.
