Elephant Herd Sparks Curfew-Like Alert in Hazaribag After Fatal Trampling Incident
A curfew-like situation gripped the Tatijharia block of Hazaribag district on Friday night as a herd of elephants entered the Panimako area, triggering a massive security and wildlife alert. This heightened vigilance comes just days after a tragic incident in Gondwar under Churchu, where seven individuals lost their lives after being trampled by elephants, underscoring the urgent need for preventive measures.
Intensive Night-Long Vigil and Coordinated Response
The district administration and forest department launched an intensive, night-long vigil to monitor the movement of the elephant herd. Sirens from forest department vehicles echoed through villages as teams moved from one habitation to another, urgently warning residents to stay indoors and avoid any outdoor activities. By Saturday evening, the herd was reported to have moved into the forests of Simradhab and Bedmakka, providing some relief to the affected communities.
Officials noted that this was perhaps the first time such a coordinated and sustained alert had been witnessed in the block, reflecting a proactive approach to wildlife management and public safety.
Widespread Patrolling and Community Involvement
Acting on instructions from Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh and forest officials, teams conducted continuous patrolling across numerous villages, including Panimako, Hardiya, Mandpa, Khambhwa, Jeruwadih, Karamba, Simradhab, Amanari, Bedmakka, Bandih, and Daharbhang. This extensive coverage aimed to ensure no area was left unmonitored during the critical period.
BDO-cum-CO Rashmi Khushboo Minz and officer in-charge Indrajeet Kumar, along with forest personnel, remained on the ground throughout the night, coordinating efforts and providing real-time updates. Local volunteers and social workers were also put on high alert, contributing to a community-driven response. To prevent the spread of rumours and ensure accurate information dissemination, updates were actively shared through social media platforms.
Efforts to Redirect Elephants and Safety Advisories
Indrajeet Kumar emphasized that efforts are underway to drive the elephants towards a safe corridor, away from human settlements, to minimize future risks. Residents were strongly advised not to venture into forested areas or attempt to provoke the animals, highlighting the importance of coexistence and safety protocols in wildlife-prone regions.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-elephant conflicts in areas like Hazaribag, where rapid response and public cooperation are crucial for preventing tragedies. The coordinated alert system, involving administrative, forest, and community elements, sets a precedent for handling such emergencies effectively in the future.
