Gujarat Shivers: Naliya Hits 6.4°C, Rajkot Dips to 10°C Amid Vibrant Summit
Gujarat's Cold Wave: Naliya at 6.4°C, Rajkot at 10°C

Residents across Gujarat are bundling up as a significant cold wave grips the state, bringing notably chilly mornings and nights. While daytime conditions remain pleasant, temperatures have plummeted well below normal in several key districts, creating a stark contrast.

Key Districts Record Sharp Temperature Drops

The town of Naliya in Kutch district continues to be the epicenter of the cold spell. After recording a low of 4.8 degrees Celsius on Friday, it once again experienced the sharpest chill on the following night. The mercury here dropped to a brisk 6.4°C, which is a significant 3.2 degrees below the seasonal normal.

Following Naliya, Amreli reported a minimum temperature of 8.4°C, marking a departure of 2.9 degrees from what is usually expected. The cold has not spared the bustling city of Rajkot either, which is currently hosting the high-profile three-day Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference. The city saw its night temperature fall by 2.5 degrees to settle at 10°C.

Widespread Chill Across the State

The cold wave is widespread, affecting both interior and coastal regions. Deesa recorded a low of 10.4°C, while the state capital, Gandhinagar, was close behind at 10.5°C. Interestingly, even coastal areas are feeling the bite. The coastal town of Porbandar had a bitterly cold night with the temperature falling to 11.1°C, which is a steep 3.1 degrees below its normal minimum for this time of year.

Meteorological Reasons Behind the Chill

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided an explanation for this sudden dip. They attribute the conditions to northerly to northeasterly winds that are currently blowing across the region at low levels. These winds are transporting cold and dry air from northern parts of the country into Gujarat, leading to the observed drop in nighttime and early morning temperatures.

This weather pattern underscores the typical winter dynamics for the region but highlights an intensity that is notably below average. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the cold, especially during the early hours. The pleasant afternoons offer little respite from the penetrating morning chill.
