Gurgaon Enforces Strict Monthly Reporting for Clean-Air Action Plan to Central Commission
In a significant move to combat air pollution, Gurgaon has instituted mandatory monthly reporting for its comprehensive clean-air action plan. Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya has directed all implementing agencies to submit detailed progress updates by the fifth of every month. These reports will be forwarded to the Central Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) to ensure transparency and accountability in pollution control efforts.
Coordination Meeting Drives Implementation
The directive was issued during a crucial coordination meeting involving multiple agencies responsible for air-pollution control. Key participants included the traffic police, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), and Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB). Officials from GMCBL, HSVP, PWD, and NHAI were also present, reflecting a multi-departmental approach to tackling the city's air quality crisis.
Commissioner Dahiya emphasized the importance of timely reporting, stating, "This action plan was implemented in coordination with various government agencies. I instructed the concerned officials to ensure they submit department-specific reports before the fifth of every month. This will enable timely submission to CAQM and guarantee proper implementation of the plan."
Targets and Traffic Management Initiatives
The meeting focused on reviewing measures aimed at reducing particulate pollution (PM10 and PM2.5 levels) by 10% by 2026. Officials confirmed that work under both short-term and long-term action plans has commenced at several locations across the city. This follows the identification of 33 major traffic congestion points, where interventions are being prioritized.
Key infrastructure improvements include:
- Signal optimization and enhanced lane management
- Road infrastructure upgrades at critical junctions
- Proposed flyovers and major infrastructure works near national highways
Technology-Driven Monitoring and Road Redevelopment
A innovative aspect discussed was leveraging technology for environmental monitoring. The meeting explored using 2,722 cameras being installed at 258 locations under phase two of GMDA's CCTV project. These cameras could potentially monitor:
- Cleanliness and sanitation compliance
- Waterlogging during monsoon seasons
- Illegal garbage and debris dumping
- Road pothole identification and repair tracking
Additional Commissioner Yash Jhaluka has been tasked with evaluating the feasibility of this technological approach to enhance monitoring efficiency.
Comprehensive Annual Action Plan Details
The monthly reporting requirement supports a broader annual action plan presented to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav in December. This ambitious plan includes multiple initiatives:
Infrastructure and transportation improvements:
- Revamping over 722 kilometers of roads across multiple agencies
- 611 kilometers specifically under MCG jurisdiction
- Installation of electric vehicle charging points
- Expansion of city bus services to reduce vehicular emissions
Dust control and green initiatives:
- Deployment of additional sprinkling machines
- Procurement of mechanical road sweeping machines
- Planting native Indian shrubs on unpaved surfaces to prevent dust
Addressing Road Dust as Primary Pollution Source
With road dust identified as a major contributor to Gurgaon's air pollution, specific plans have been developed for 2026-27. The comprehensive road redevelopment strategy includes:
Paving damaged and unpaved roads to minimize dust generation
Strengthening road edges to prevent erosion and particulate release
Implementing regular mechanical sweeping and washing schedules
The 611 kilometers of roads under MCG will be improved in phased manner, with clearly defined monthly targets to ensure systematic progress toward the 2026 pollution reduction goals.
This structured approach combining mandatory reporting, technological monitoring, infrastructure upgrades, and targeted dust control represents Gurgaon's most comprehensive effort yet to address its persistent air quality challenges. The monthly accountability mechanism to CAQM ensures sustained focus and measurable progress in the city's clean-air initiatives.
