Haryana Forest Department Unveils Major Ecological Restoration Initiative for Nuh's Aravali Region

The Haryana forest department has announced a significant ecological restoration and eco-tourism development plan targeting the environmentally fragile Aravali region in Nuh district. This comprehensive initiative aims to reclaim degraded land and strengthen ecological linkages through multiple coordinated projects.

Core Components of the Restoration Strategy

A central element of the proposal involves transforming an abandoned mining pit in Silkho village that collects rainwater into an eco-tourism destination. This project will be jointly developed by the forest department and the Mewat Development Agency, representing a collaborative approach to environmental rehabilitation.

The plantation work at this and other sites will be executed under the Andaman Compensatory Afforestation (CA) Plan, which serves as compensation for forest land diverted for non-forest purposes such as mining, road construction, and infrastructure development. This framework allows afforestation activities linked to forest land diversion in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to be implemented in other regions, including parts of Haryana.

Site-Specific Ecological Restoration Approach

Forest officials emphasize that this initiative moves beyond routine plantation exercises to focus on site-specific ecological restoration. The program will utilize native species particularly suited to the rocky and semi-arid Aravali landscape, ensuring greater survival rates and ecological integration.

The restoration plan prioritizes several critical areas:

  • Reclamation of degraded hills and abandoned mining pits
  • Restoration of forest fringes and ravines
  • Focus on Nuh and Gurgaon districts

This comprehensive approach integrates multiple conservation elements beyond mere tree planting, including water conservation measures, soil stabilization techniques, and habitat creation for local wildlife.

Addressing Nuh's Environmental Challenges

The initiative holds particular importance for Nuh district, which has experienced extensive mining activities, significant hill degradation, and substantial loss of green cover over recent years. These environmental pressures have made the region vulnerable to soil erosion, water stress, and biodiversity decline.

Subhash Yadav, conservator of forest for South Haryana, explained the project's significance: "Reclaiming abandoned mining sites and restoring forest patches could help revive local ecosystems while discouraging further environmental damage. The focus is on reclaiming degraded sites and improving habitat connectivity while ensuring ecological protection."

Infrastructure Development for Regulated Nature Tourism

The restoration plan includes developing a jungle track connecting the KMP Expressway to Taoru Road, passing through forest stretches and Kotla Lake. The lake itself is proposed for development as a birding destination, capitalizing on its ecological potential within the Aravali belt.

"The irrigation department will execute this component of the project, as the access road near the lake falls under its jurisdiction," Yadav noted. "Signages and basic visitor information infrastructure are also planned along the route to support regulated nature tourism."

Alignment with Conservation Frameworks

Forest officials indicate that projects like the Nuh nature camp align effectively with the Andaman CA framework because they combine multiple conservation elements rather than focusing solely on tourism infrastructure. These initiatives integrate afforestation, landscape recovery, and community-linked conservation approaches.

"These initiatives will help increase green cover, support biodiversity and raise awareness about the ecological importance of the Aravali landscape," Yadav added, highlighting the multi-faceted benefits of the restoration program.

The projects are being planned with careful emphasis on conservation principles, controlled public access, and long-term ecological restoration goals, ensuring sustainable development that prioritizes environmental recovery over commercial exploitation.
