Here comes the sun, and a lifeline against it. This summer, as temperatures across India shattered records, some outdoor workers found an unusual safety net: insurance that paid out automatically when the heat became unbearable.
Nirmala Parmar spent hers on lemons. By the next afternoon, they were floating in a steel pot of nimbu paani in her Ahmedabad home. “I get around Rs 500 for my daily work. It is not enough for my monthly expenses. As soon as this insurance money came into my account, I went straight to the market.”
