National Conference at IIT Dhanbad Addresses Critical River Conservation Issues
Environmentalists and hydrology experts from across India convened at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) in Dhanbad on Sunday for a significant two-day national conference titled 'Mission Y'. The gathering focused intensively on the pressing themes of river conservation and ensuring equitable water distribution across regions.
Conference Theme and Inaugural Discussions
The event is centrally organized around the theme 'Land Acquisition for Rivers', highlighting the complex relationship between terrestrial development and aquatic ecosystem preservation. Conference convener and renowned hydrologist Anshumali opened the proceedings by directing attention to several critical areas of concern.
He detailed that the inaugural sessions would delve into changing land-use patterns, the precarious survival of smaller water streams, and the profound impacts of climate change on river systems nationwide. Anshumali strongly advocated for a scientific, data-driven approach combined with widespread collective action to achieve sustainable water resource management for future generations.
Expert Insights on River System Preservation
Padma Shri awardee R K Sinha contributed to the dialogue by emphasizing the vital function of tributaries. He described them as the essential lifelines feeding major rivers and argued for their explicit protection to be integrated into national policy and regional planning frameworks. Without safeguarding these smaller channels, the health of entire river basins is compromised, he noted.
Adding a political and grassroots perspective, environmentalist and independent MLA Saryu Roy underscored the fundamental importance of preserving smaller rivers and streams. He stated unequivocally that these water bodies constitute the very backbone of larger river systems. "It is an impossibility to protect our major rivers if we neglect their sources and tributaries," Roy asserted, calling for intensified conservation initiatives at the community level.
Roy also referenced Anshumali's extensive six-year research, which has empirically established the critical role of stream conservation in maintaining the overall health and biodiversity of river ecosystems. This research provides a scientific foundation for the policy recommendations discussed.
Expected Outcomes and Future Directions
The conference is anticipated to yield actionable insights and practical frameworks for sustainable river management. Participants aim to draft recommendations that balance ecological preservation with developmental needs, promoting water equity. The collective expertise assembled at IIT Dhanbad represents a significant step toward formulating a cohesive national strategy for river conservation in the face of escalating environmental challenges.
