Kerala Weather Alert: Deep Depression to Cross Sri Lanka Coast, Squally Winds Forecast
IMD Issues Heavy Rain, Squall Warning for Kerala, Tamil Nadu Coasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather advisory for parts of South India, predicting rainfall and potentially squally conditions over the next few days. A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is driving this forecast, prompting warnings for coastal regions.

Cyclonic Systems Drive Unsettled Weather

According to the IMD, a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to continue its movement and cross the north Sri Lanka coast by Saturday. This system is a primary driver of the anticipated weather changes. Simultaneously, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining south Kerala coast, further contributing to atmospheric instability.

As a result of these systems, rain or thundershowers are most likely to occur at one or two places across Kerala in the coming days. The IMD's bulletin highlights specific impacts for coastal areas.

Coastal Warnings and Sea Conditions

The department has forecast squally weather with wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph. These conditions are likely to prevail along and off the Tamil Nadu coast, over the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Comorin area.

Consequently, sea conditions are expected to be rough to very rough in these zones. The IMD has issued a strong advisory, stating that fishermen are advised not to venture into these sea areas until Saturday. Those already out in the deep sea have been urged to avoid the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal, the adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean, and areas along and off the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal coasts, as well as the Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area by Saturday.

Temperature Variations Across Districts

While the focus is on rainfall and winds, the IMD also reported notable variations in minimum temperatures across several Kerala districts. Minimum temperatures were below normal in Kottayam and Kozhikode districts. In contrast, Kollam district recorded above-normal minimum temperatures.

Kottayam recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 19.4°C, indicating a slight dip in nighttime warmth for the region. Residents in the affected coastal districts are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins and exercise caution, especially if involved in maritime activities.
