Gujarat Braces for Season's First Heatwave as IMD Issues Yellow Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the season's first yellow alert for several districts across Gujarat, signaling the onset of significantly hotter weather conditions. Residents in Ahmedabad and surrounding areas have already been experiencing unseasonably high temperatures, and the forecast indicates a further intensification of heat in the coming days.
IMD Forecasts Sporadic Heatwave Impact
According to the latest IMD bulletin, sporadic heatwave conditions are expected to affect Ahmedabad and numerous other districts on Monday and Tuesday. This alert follows an initial warning issued for Kutch and Rajkot on Sunday, which has now been expanded to cover a broader region.
The districts under the yellow alert include Kutch, Banaskantha, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Amerli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Vadodara, and Surat. These areas are anticipated to witness temperatures rising above normal levels, with coastal regions particularly prone to hot and humid conditions.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Recorded
On Sunday, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 39.4 degrees Celsius, which was a staggering 5.2 degrees above the normal range for this time of year. The minimum temperature stood at 19.1 degrees Celsius, marking a 1.2-degree increase above average.
Other districts also experienced notable heat spikes:
- Rajkot and Surendranagar saw the mercury touch 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this summer.
- Mahua recorded 39.8 degrees Celsius.
- Deesa reached 39.6 degrees Celsius.
Forecast and Long-Term Predictions
The IMD predicts a gradual rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures by two to three degrees over the next three days, after which conditions are expected to stabilize with no significant changes. From March 11 onwards, temperatures are likely to level off, providing some relief from the intense heat.
In its long-range forecast for March, the IMD indicates a high probability of above-normal temperatures across the majority of Gujarat. This suggests that the current heatwave may be part of a broader trend of elevated temperatures throughout the month.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and using cooling measures to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.
