India Braces for Extended Period of Severe Weather as IMD Issues Nationwide Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a comprehensive forecast indicating that many parts of India are set to experience several days of inclement weather. The prediction includes heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hail storms, and gusty winds affecting numerous states, driven by active weather systems influenced by western disturbances and cyclonic circulations.
Northwest India Faces Intense Rainfall and Snowfall
From April 7 to April 10, northwest India is likely to witness very heavy rains, particularly impacting Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These regions are expected to see fairly widespread to widespread rainfall or snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, and gusts reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour.
Additionally, scattered to fairly widespread rains and storms are anticipated over the plains, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan, specifically on April 7 and 8. Rajasthan is predicted to experience particularly intense conditions, with squally thunderstorms and strong winds at 50 to 60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph on April 7.
Isolated heavy rains may occur over the Kashmir valley on April 7 and over Himachal Pradesh on April 8, adding to the severe weather outlook for this region.
Northeast India Set for Continuous Rainfall
According to the latest IMD bulletin, northeast India is poised to witness continuous rain for the next four days, with scattered to fairly widespread precipitation along with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Isolated heavy rains are forecasted over Arunachal Pradesh on April 7, 9, and 12, while heavy rain may be experienced over Assam and Meghalaya on April 8 and 12.
Similar weather conditions are expected to affect Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura over approximately four days, highlighting the widespread nature of the weather system in this part of the country.
Eastern and Central India Under Storm Influence
Unstable weather is anticipated over Eastern India, where isolated to scattered rain or thunder showers and gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 50 kmph will prevail in the coming four days. Thundersqualls are predicted over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar in the early hours of April 8, while similar conditions are expected over Jharkhand and Odisha on April 7 and 8.
On April 8, hail storms are forecasted over Bihar and Jharkhand, adding to the severe weather risks. In Central India, weather activity will be somewhat subdued, with isolated to scattered rain or thunder showers and gusty winds anticipated over the next three to four days.
South India to Experience Scattered Rains
Over South India, light to moderate rainfall coupled with thunder showers, lightning, and gusty winds will occur across Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Karnataka from April 7 to 10. While the intensity of rainfall is expected to remain low to moderate, lightning activity is anticipated in some parts of Karnataka.
Hot and humid weather will prevail in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu on April 7, providing a contrast to the wet conditions elsewhere in the region.
The IMD's forecast underscores the need for preparedness as multiple weather systems converge to bring widespread severe conditions across India in the coming days.
